Most young adults long to move into their own apartments. Along with the excitement of stamping on your style on your new homes comes the responsibility of buying the most practical pieces of furniture that will make a small space cohesive, functional and attractive.
After having bought your bed and at least one comfortable chair or sofa, it is time to think about furniture that will meet as many needs as possible and the smaller the apartment, the more carefully you will need to will have to consider multi-functional furniture.
Tables are essential items. You will need a place to work or study, a surface on which to eat and a space on which to place reading lamps, table lamps, books, a music center, drinks, ornaments and all sorts of miscellaneous items in a practical and uncluttered way.
It is important to know exactly how much space you have to devote to various tables, so measure your rooms and decide how much space can be allocated to each room. You will need to be creative if you are living in a very tiny apartment. Decide whether you have space for additional furniture such as bookcases and cabinets.
At table in the kitchen is essential and if there is no space for one consider purchasing a drop-down table that can be pushed up out of the way when not in use. Search the internet for examples of these, carefully measure your space, purchase the necessities and set to work if you are good at do it yourself projects. If not, post a notice on the community board for someone to do the job for your or rope in a willing and able relative.
If you space for more than one table in the apartment, consider buying two identical tables which can be pushed together to make adequate space for entertaining your friends. An attractive table cloth will hide the join – and if you are considering this option choose a design that will minimize the join in the first place. These tables will have to have plenty of leg room, as you cannot work or eat comfortably if there is nowhere for your knees to go!
If you have space for a coffee table make sure it has plenty of shelves for the million and one items that will need a home and a surface that will not be damaged by the placing of mugs, bottles and plates on top.
A bedside table with a reading lamp adds a great deal of convenience. Remember that the higher the table the bigger the spread of light will be. Again, you will want to purchase a bedside table with extra shelving and a drawer or two for books, etcetera.
If you are on a tight budget check out yard sales and sites like Craigslist. Remember that a coat of paint can hide a multitude of sins so look for design features and solid workmanship rather than pretty but badly-made furniture.
With a little bit of ingenuity and a few good ideas culled from magazines and the internet you will be able to make the most of your limited space, while keeping your apartment looking attractive and functional.
